As a former police officer, I have faced challenges that tested my resilience on all levels: physically, emotionally, and mentally.
The years I spent in service in Germany taught me invaluable lessons about the strength of the human spirit and the tools needed to overcome adversity. Here are some of the most important insights I gained from my time in uniform:
The Power of Unwaveringness: Staying True to One's Principles
At the beginning of my career, I faced situations that tested my integrity. An unforgettable moment was when I witnessed a colleague behaving in a way that contradicted my values. At that time, my inexperience led me to follow instructions, even though I felt deeply uncomfortable. Years later, in a similar situation, I decided to stand up for what I believed was right. This change showed me how important it is to act in accordance with one's values—it is the foundation for inner peace and resilience.
Why I Earned the Nickname "Switzerland"
In my role, I always valued creating a safe environment for my colleagues. They knew they could trust me with anything without fear of judgment or betrayal. This trustful interaction not only promoted teamwork but also strengthened my own resilience. Supporting others gave me a sense of purpose and reminded me of the power of human connections.
Trauma, My Daily Bread
Resilience often means dealing with the unexpected. Whether it was delivering the news of a child's death to grieving parents or coping with the shock of tragic events, I learned to combine professionalism with compassion. These moments underscored the importance of processing emotions rather than suppressing them—a lesson that stays with me to this day.
Resilience Is a Skill, Not a Trait, and Therefore Learnable
Through my experiences, I realized that resilience is not something you either have or don't have—it's a skill that can be developed. Seeking support from trusted individuals, maintaining a curiosity for life, and focusing on solutions rather than problems contribute to building a resilient mindset. Over time, I have recognized the importance of creating a support system and utilizing tools like mindfulness and self-reflection.
Strength Lies in Vulnerability
One of my greatest breakthroughs came when I allowed myself to acknowledge and accept feelings that I had suppressed for years. Moving to the USA and facing new challenges brought layers of unresolved trauma to the surface. Instead of ignoring these feelings, I used my coaching knowledge to process them. Accepting vulnerability was a turning point for me, and it is one of the most important lessons I now share with my clients.
My journey from police officer to resilience coach has shown me that resilience does not mean being invincible, but remaining flexible and finding strength in the toughest moments of life.
